RGS-IBG lecture on 27th Sep: Treading Lightly: Reinventing 19th century desert exploration by camel by Andrew Harper

The grand days of 19th Century desert exploration were pivotal in the development of inland Australia, and the camel quickly became the choice of transport to explore the blank areas on the map. Focusing on the record rains and floods in the Simpson Desert from 2009 to 2011, Andrew will speak about adapting a 150 year heritage to further our desert knowledge in the 21st Century. Over the three years Andrew led scientific expeditions right across this huge wilderness, the world’s largest parallel sand-ridge desert, documenting the incredible proliferation of its flora and fauna, including massive plagues of native rats and mega-swarms of budgerigars.

[RGS-IBG lecture on 9th Sep - Let elephants be elephants by Tammie Matson and Nadya Hutagulung]

Conservationist and best-selling author Dr Tammie Matson, and Nadya Hutagalung, founder of Green Kampong and regional TV personality, will speak about their quest to help stop the poaching of elephants by killing the demand for ivory in Asia. From the vast savannahs of Kenya to the bustling ivory markets in Bangkok, Tammie and Nadya are taking on the black markets of Asia in the Let Elephants Be Elephants campaign, determined to make a difference and break the chains of the ivory trade that causes the poaching.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to Let Elephants Be Elephants.

Travelling throughout Africa and Asia in her search for answers while writing her new book Planet Elephant, Tammie has met presidents and poachers in palaces and back alleys as she has journeyed to the dark heart of a dark industry. Now based in Singapore, Tammie is working with Nadya to raise awareness of the connection between Asia and Africa on the illegal wildlife trade.

As one of Asia’s most recognised faces, Nadya has devoted her time and voice to environmental advocacy. She made headlines building one of Singapore’s first eco-homes from scratch and she has been Singapore’s Ambassador for WWF's Earth Hour for the last five years, and is now a Global Ambassador. She was voted one of Asia’s Leading Trendmakers by Asiaweek magazine alongside the Dalai Lama, and in 2012 was awarded the SIP Fellow Award at the Global Social Innovators awards.
