[INVITATION] 'You only live once' by Khoo Swee Chiow, 15 February. Tickets available now.

Dear Geographers,

Khoo Swee Chiow, Singapore’s best known adventurer and explorer, will give a talk entitled “You Only Live Once” to the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)’s Singapore branch on Friday 15 February 2013.

Swee Chiow is a hugely inspiring and engaging adventurer. He describes mountains as his first love, and has climbed the highest peak on each of the seven continents (including Everest three times!). But he has also been to both poles, swum the Malacca Straits, and cycled, roller-bladed and kayaked his way around Asia, setting several records. Swee Chiow will draw from his experience of over 40 expeditions to talk about how and why he does it, what he has learnt along the way and what he has planned for his next mind-bogglingly ambitious adventure.

This exhibition depicts Singapore as seen through cartographers, geologists, mariners, military generals and town planners. Beginning with the arrival of the British and merchants from the nascent East India Company, to military strategists of Imperial Japan and postwar city planners, "Vignettes in Time" provides snippets of little-known histories. Displayed for the first time are many maps from the collections fo the National Library Singapore and Mr Lim Shao Bin. With over 130 maps on display, this is the single largest showcase of maps in Singapore. Come explore a little-known Singapore through vignettes of the past. This exhibition is curated by Mr Lim Chen Sian. "Vignettes in Time" is jointly organised by National Library Singapore and the Singapore Heritage Society.
